National Education Day, 2019:-
• India celebrates National Education Day on November 11 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who served as the first Minister of Education of independent India.• On September 11, 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development had decided to celebrate November 11 as National Education Day.
• November 11 every year, from 2008 onward, is celebrated as the National Education Day, without declaring it a holiday.
About him:
• Maulana Sayyid Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad popularly known as Maulana Azad was an Indian scholar and independence activist.• He was one of the senior leaders of the Indian National Congress during the Indian independence movement.
• During his tenure as education minister, Maulana Azad established a national education system.
• His primary focus was free primary education.
• In 1922, he was awarded Bharat Ratna — nation’s highest civilian honour, for his contributions toward education.
• He was also a trailblazer for the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and the foundation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) — an institution to supervise and advance higher education across the country.
